Steve Jobs memorial was unveiled near the RUSSOFT office
Memorial in honor of Apple corporation founder – Steve Jobs was unveiled yesterday in Saint-Petersburg, Russia
Jan 10, 2013
The monument was installed in the courtyard of Technopark of Saint-Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (SPbNRU ITMO), where the RUSSOFT office is also located.
The memorial design competition was won by Gleb Tarasov, the resident of Saint-Petersburg with the project called "Solar QR-code". According to the author’s idea, QR-code had to be changed every day, but you could read it only around noon. However this project was abandoned, due to usual for Saint-Petersburg cloudy weather, as was explained at the monument opening by the author.
The final version of memorial represents a copy of iPhone in human growth. The interactive touch screen on the front panel shows Jobs’ biography, photos and videos. At the back panel the QR-code is displayed, leading visitors to the website, dedicated to Steve Jobs.

Russia is steadily developing its positions in the field of information technology. Software products developed by Russian programmers and companies are used all over the world. Many regions of the Russian Federation are successful in IT-technologies. Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Moscow, Kazan, Omsk, St. Petersburg – all of these cities have something to be proud of.
"St. Petersburg is considered to be the Russian center of information technology. Known IT universities are located here; students from St. Petersburg regularly win prestigious international competitions in programming. St. Petersburg communities of IT professionals enjoy deserved recognition; its representatives regularly receive awards from colleagues for their achievements in the IT field. This is why we believe that St. Petersburg can be called not only the capital of the North, but the IT-capital of Russia. And this is where Russia’s first monument to Steve Jobs, who became a symbol of progress, is opened. His ideas helped information technologies to become mainstream. He has really changed the world for the better" – noted in SPbNRU ITMO.
In 2012, the Progress-IT Fund held a competition for the best concept of the memory of Steve Jobs in St. Petersburg. Many submissions were received from around the world. As an result of online voting and evaluation of the professional jury, including representatives of the St. Petersburg administration, IT professionals, well-known bloggers and artists, the winning "Solar QR-code" project was chosen.
Bertrand Meyer, Prof. of the Software Engineering, ETU Zurich, noted: "…Steve Jobs was one of those who predicted the predominant role of software in IT. Now it became evident that software controls the World, but 30 or even 20 years back that was not so obvious."
Valentin Makarov, President of RUSSOFT Association, commented: "The opening of Steve Jobs memorial in St. Petersburg, quite corresponds the historical traditions of the city. Steve Jobs influenced the development of human civilization and deserved the memory of mankind. We should not argue about whether it is good or bad to put monument to him in Russia; but to create conditions so that more and more heroes of world IT industry appeared in our country."
