Mar 25, 2002
March 14, 2002, Moscow - I.T.Co, the leading Russian high-tech company, officially announced its new subsidiary Aplana Software, a company that will focus on software development, maintenance and integration services. It is the third daughter company of I.T.Co (the other two are Arsenal and Mobiko). The new company was founded on the basis of the Custom Software Development Center which had been operating in I.T.Co since March 2000.

Setting up Aplana is a major step in implementation of I.T.Co¦s long-term strategy aimed at entering the most promising business sectors, expansion of services and movement into new markets in the CIS and in the West.

Aplana will focus its operations on Western and Russian markets of large and medium-sized enterprises. Making Aplana a separate business entity stems from significant differences between Western and Russian business practices, from peculiarities of financial and marketing policies, and from special requirements of Western customers to their project counterparts (company certification, knowledge and practical usage of world standards in the area of project implementation, etc.). In Russia Aplana will operate as an independent company with a group of selected customers. However, the main method of promoting Aplana services in Russia will be through I.T.Co projects where the subsidiary's resources will be used.

It is not a mere coincidence that custom software development was chosen as Aplana¦s main business. In the last three years software development business in Russia steadily grows at 25-30% per year which exceeds the average growth rate in packaged applications development (about 18%) and the growth rates of other IT services (consulting, maintenance, operations services).

Russia is becoming more popular as a worldwide software supplier - today most of the leading market analysts list Russia among the five largest offshore programming providers with the most optimal price/performance ratio and high annual growth rate (about 40%). According to Information Week, Russia¦s services will remain attractive in the future because offshore programming is developing at a fast rate due to shrinking IT budgets.

Today we observe a very significant shift in corporate offshore programming. Some time ago custom software development was mainly used for "second-rate projects". Nowadays, both in Russia and abroad, corporations tend to outsource complex strategic projects which may embrace the entire cycle of building and developing an IT system. At the same time customers pay greater attention to additional functions unusual for traditional offshore business (risk sharing, IT budget optimization, etc.).

That is why Aplana offers its Russian and Western customers the widest possible spectrum of professional services in development and integration of software systems, implementation and maintenance of applications. Aplana intends to cut the cost and reduce the length of projects by developing industry competencies and by building whole series of customized industrial solutions (for telecommunications, finances, machine-building, etc.) on the basis of a ready-made "kernels". Aplana will try to realize its main business principles through long-term mutually beneficial relations with customers based on cooperation, close interaction and professionalism.

"We are focused on real cooperation with customers. We try to avoid a traditional "customer-supplier" model," says Victor Weinstein, President, Aplana. "Our experience shows that long-term friendly relations bring benefits to both parties by reducing project risks, schedules, and, consequently, budgets. Besides, knowledge of customer business and adaptation to customer software development standards can significantly raise project quality."

"The issue of long-term friendly relations with customers is widely discussed today. We try to act rather than speak in this area. At present we are ready to make our development and management processes completely transparent to the customer and to guarantee their manageability and predictability in the course of projects."

Aplana¦s business plans are aimed at bringing the company to the leading positions in the Russian custom software development market. By 2004 Aplana intends to become one of the three leading players of this market. By that time company revenues should reach US $9.6 million. According to Aplana¦s top management, the key factors that would help to achieve the ambitious goals are the HR strategy and the technological strategy that have already been developed for the company.
