A seed fund that was created last year by Microsoft is being used to provide funding for support software to startup companies in Russia, the Moscow Times reported.

The Skolkovo Fund's latest beneficiary is Speereo, a speech-recognition company, according to the news source. During the next decade, Microsoft hopes to offer help to at least 100 Russian startups through the fund, assisting the country's burgeoning software and IT industries.

Speereo business development vice president Daniel Ischenko told the Times his company was grateful for the aid.

"These grants are a huge support and will move our technologies forward," he said.

The high quality of math and science workers in Russia makes the country an important market for Microsoft, operational director Kevin Turner told the newspaper. The company has already lent its aid to several projects, including a smartphone calendar, an anti-piracy app and a social media analysis program.

The support software industry in Russia is certainly among the most innovative in the world, but widespread piracy and IP theft are still a significant threat to its continued growth, experts say.
