Russian venture Fund Runa Capital and two partners have invested $3 million in the development of project Engine X (nginx), the world’s third used server. The money will go to develop a new commercial project and the software for application in the United States.
Runa Capital deals with development and projecting of web-sites, manufacturing of software and hardware, advertizing and marketing, consulting, E-commerce, IT and communications, mobile technologies and other fields of activities.
Its web-server is used by more than 20% of high-loaded internet resources in the world, including Facebook, Zappos, Groupon, LivingSocial, Hulu, TechCrunch, Dropbox è WordPress.
Aside from Runa Capital, two other investment funds – BV Capital and MSD Capital, the latter owned by Dell general sirector Michael Dell have laid out $3 million. Nginx Corp plans to open its head office in San-Francisco this month or November.
Nginex is the brainchild of Igor Sysoev, a graduate of the Moscow Bauman Technology University, who for a number of year worked for Rambler, having in 2004 decided to devise a new server. Just several days ago his server was used by 43 million domens. It also is the only server on the market that shows a steady growth of popularity, with 5 million new web-sites switching over to it monthly – a 25% growth since the start of this year.
Nginx plans to pay the greatest attention to the development of software for control and servicing of high-loaded resources and optimization of delivery of different types of content with a greater level of safety and productivity.
Hosting providers may relay on the updated versions of web-servers DreamHost, Media Temple, CloudFlare, Engine Yard and Linode, which have already use this server at its capacity. Nginx is in the process of establishing partner relations with software suppliers and developers in the United States, Europe and Asia.
Igor Sysoev says that the $3 million in investments will help Nginx accelerate the growth of its popularity, and raise its production to a new quality level by developing a commercial product that will offer new infrastructure solutions to internet companies at different markets, suppliers of cloud services, media and entertainment businesses.
Writing about the deal, web-site resource msnbc.com calls it the largest Russian technological project whose software is used by 43 million companies in the world. So far its popularity is almost equal to that of 100 million Kalashnikov guns and 80 million books by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Russia’s software image is at present vying that of the United States’ Microsoft.
Given the facts, Nginx may well outgrow Microsoft’s servers field, and then - that of Apache.
