Dubna university puts IT-enabled ‘intelligent guard’ at its gate

May 16, 2013
The Dubna International University of Nature, Society and Man in the town of Dubna some 130km north of Moscow announced prior to the May 1 holiday season that its innovators have developed software for an intelligent video surveillance system that can automatically recognize vehicles’ license plates and control road gates to let a vehicle inside a guarded territory.

The system is a joint project between the university and Tsezis, a small spin-off innovation company set up by the university and Nordavind, a resident of the Dubna Special Economic Zone nearby.

The system consists of a server, a computer, and a camera mounted on the roof of one of the university’s buildings. When a car approaches, the smart image recognition software automatically locates its license plate and checks if the car is entered in its database and therefore permitted to arrive at the area. With a match the system opens the gate and then closes it when the vehicle gets inside.

The university underscored that its system "is easy to run and can be used to service a territory with a large number of vehicles."

The Dubna university now has about 4,000 students. On its campus there are five training buildings, five dormitories, a sports facility open for Dubna town residents, and a lyceum for gifted children.
