Cisco and Skolkovo Launch Joint R&D and Training Initiative

May 24, 2013
Cisco and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) have agreed to pool their efforts in improving the training of Russian innovation managers and doing joint R&D, according to a source at Cisco Systems Russia.

The cooperation was formally agreed upon in the wake of a meeting held on April 24 by the Innovation Working Group of the U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission in Washington, DC.

Under the terms of the agreement, the partners will work out joint programs to improve the development of a skilled cadre of innovation managers in Russia and stimulate competition among Russian scientific and engineering entities. The programs will call for on-the-job training sessions for managers and chief engineers currently studying at Skoltech.

The cooperation agreement also stipulates exchange of best practices, including rendering methodological support and conducting training seminars. Skoltech and Cisco are expected to collaborate on a range of R&D projects.

Under the auspices of the Innovation Working Group of the U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission and with support from the Russian Ministry of Economic Development and Russia’s Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI), the two partners are also launching a separate training program for administrative personnel, scientific managers, and entrepreneurial CEOs. The program will include one- and two-week training sessions in the United States for groups of up to 30 people each. The participants will be representatives of government bodies, scientific organizations, and business communities.

The new program will focus on making trainees aware of the latest achievements in innovation development. Its syllabus is expected to cover such topics as cybersecurity, cloud computing, venture investing, and more. Skoltech outside Moscow and Cisco’s HQs in San Jose, California, will provide the main venues for the program. Leading international experts will be invited to deliver lectures.

An inaugural interdisciplinary group will join the program in September-October 2013, Cisco Systems Russia said. If the effort is found to be effective, new rounds of training will be planned.
