Russian President Signs New Law on Foreign IT Workers

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on Monday simplifying the process for companies wishing to employ highly-trained foreign IT specialists

Jun 26, 2014
Previously, foreign IT workers were required to earn a salary of at least 2 million rubles ($59,000) per year to be eligible for a work permit from a Russian IT company. The new law reduces that sum by half, to 1 million rubles ($29,500).

The change in the law was approved by the State Duma on June 11 and by the Federation Council on June 18.

"The Federal Law is aimed at simplifying procedures for employing highly-trained foreign experts for Russian organizations operating in the field of information technology in Russia…," according to a statement on the Kremlin’s website.

No date was given on the Kremlin’s website for when the law would go into effect.
