RUSSOFT Forum, Investment Fair and Mobile Software Forum ran together to meet developers, distributors and investors in one place

On June 11 the 9th annual RUSSOFT Software Development Forum closed in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Forum was organized by RUSSOFT Association together with ADMIN Ltd. company and with support of a number of global leading mobile software and hardware vendors - Forum Nokia, Intel, Microsoft, Digia, as well as "KPMG in Russia & CIS", APKIT, DLA Piper and Exigen Services.

RUSSOFT Forum is an annual event for software developers which aims at getting together representatives of different branches of software industry and giving thus the opportunity to discuss problems and prospects common for the whole industry. More importantly such alliance of the industry while combining companies’ vices and efforts simplifies the communication with speakers for the Ministries and other local and Federal authorities who are in charge of building favorable legal system for the ICT sector.

The Forum agenda this year was full of unusual and diversified sections. Many of the participants noted that the forum represented a combination of various multipurpose events united by and for the mixed audience of software developers. These were first of all the events of regular RUSSOFT Forum, the Investment Fair and the Mobile Software Forum.

During the two days forum participants discussed political, legal and technological aspects of software industry operation. For example during the first roundtable dedicated to coverage of government policy in regards software industry the leaders of the market discussed the vexed problem of absence of government attention to the support and progress of software development as the fastest growing economy branch, especially in the tough economic environment. The roundtable participants were confident that the competition in the Global IT market will grow and the prize will go to those market players whose local governments support the industry as India, China and some others.

Experts of KPMG in Russia & CIS, DLA Piper and Exigen Services held seminars on legal and taxation issues in software development, described ways of tax structuring in software development and outsourcing projects and also highlighted current opportunities of software development outsourcing.

The Investment Fair consisted of three rounds and started with workshops on the first stages of investment during which Microsoft representatives showcased new opportunities for technological start-ups. Quattor Dimensionis and St. Petersburg Organization of Business Angels described their opportunities and their investment programs for SMBs. Managers of Technopark St. Petersburg told about the opportunities given to small business by Ingria business incubator. RUSSBA Chairman highlighted investment resources for the early stages that the union provides.

The second workshop was a showcase of investment resources for later stages of investment. KPMG in Russia & CIS described their strategy of investment consulting, Intel shared their direct investment experience in Russia, Forum Nokia showed investment opportunities for mobile and Flash developers and VTB Assets Management venture fund presented Venture financing peculiarities in IT sphere.

The Investment Fair ended with a two-hour B2B meeting session during which the investment funds and companies interested in support of innovative business held pre-organized meetings and organized meetings for the next day with those who did not apply for the meeting beforehand.

This year’s RUSSOFT Forum was successfully combined with the second Mobile Software Forum. This is why technical workshops for mobile software developers were held parallel to the sections of RUSSOFT Forum and Investment Fair. Representatives of the leading mobile platforms vendors – Nokia, Microsoft and Intel – described the details and peculiarities of software development based on their respective platforms, and all the participants had a splendid opportunity to get answers to their questions from the vendors’ technical experts personally.

On the second day of Mobile Software Forum its panels were of no technological but practical marketing character for the companies dealing with software for mobile devices. The delegates received a detailed mobile market overview of Russia and CIS made by AC&M and a report on current trends of mobile software market from Paragon Software. Leading mobile platform vendors – Nokia and Microsoft – presented their projects of mobile content distribution and while answering numerous questions described the ways of cooperation with mobile software developers who seek new ways of distribution for their products.

RUSSOFT Forum organizers could not omit the topic of personnel training and invited ST. Petersburg university professors to take part in the event. For example Eugene Krouk, the dean of Information Systems and Control Faculty of SUAI described project model of education in modern system of ICT specialist training. Professors of ITMO raised a discussion of training high-skilled specialists in software engineering and replenishment of university staff with the best alumni.

The two-day forum ended up with a panel discussion "Experience and future of mobile software market in Russia" which was held in the manner of competition between "vendors" and "distributors" teams. The teams replied the questions asked by the moderator in the person of RUSSOFT president Valentin Makarov and by the audience. During the question-answer game representatives of Microsoft, Forum Nokia, Paragon Software, i-Free, Spb Software, Speereo Software UK, ABBYY Russia, SPIRIT DSP, Iricom and some others discussed such topics as the influence of the crisis on mobile software market, new demands of the consumers, various obstacles and operation problems and the ways to solve them.

The forum resulted in almost unanimous opinion of the participants about the event as an interesting, informative, intensive and essential for the industry especially in the tough economic environment. All the participants promised to follow the updates of the forum and take part in the next event if not in person then by virtue of their colleagues.
