WI spoke with Ian Hayes, President of Clarity Consulting and the Chairman of the BrainStorm Nearshore and Offshore Outsourcing Conference Series in Chicago on April 22 and 23. He told me what BrainStorm has planned for the two-day conference. The conference features a strategic planning perspective and presentations from some of the world's leading analysts, practitioners, and companies in the vanguard of outsourcing.
Ian will introduce the Keynote speaker, Ted Kempf, a Principal Analyst at Gartner, who will speak on the "Real and Perceived Value of Offshore Services." Ted will cover Gartner's view of the current offshore sourcing market and latest trends. Ted will also discuss how to evaluate the different countries and service providers as well as the best practices needed to achieve the highest value in an offshore proposition.
Ian Hayes will follow Ted with a presentation on "Launching a Successful Outsourcing Engagement." Ian will discuss the kind of internal framework needed once you have decided to outsource including how to scope, negotiate and manage a project. Proper planning and preparation are critical and can mean the difference between success and failure.
A keynote case study on "Making Offshore a Winning IT Strategy" is next. Richard Rumple, Vice President of Product Development for CCC Information Services, will discuss how CCC transformed its organization by allowing auto insurers to leverage existing technology and data with new systems to better meet the needs of their business partners and customers. This case study is hosted by Cognizant Technologies.
A panel on "Offshore Solutions" will follow. Chaired by Ted Kempf, the panel will include offshore service providers discussing current offerings. Panelists will examine the market, how to mitigate risks, getting the most out of partner relationships, and the strengths and drawbacks of using different countries. They will also discuss what should not be outsourced and how to create a global sourcing strategy.
The conference will then break for lunch, with desert and coffee served at the Solutions Showcase.
The afternoon sessions will begin with a panel of leading offshore and nearshore service provider representatives titled, "Shore Enough: Making Sense of Offshore Initiatives." The panelists will discuss the significant benefits, challenges, and best practices critical for success in offshore and nearshore sourcing projects. A case study on the "Nearshore Approach to Solution Delivery" will follow this panel, examining the effectiveness of nearshore options when outsourcing.
The day will end with a Best Practices panel chaired by Kip Martin, Vice President of Technology Research Services Outsourcing of the META Group. After this presentation, attendees will adjourn to an evening reception at the Solutions Showcase.
Day Two of the conference will begin with a keynote on "Selecting Applications for Offshore Outsourcing" by Andrew Efstathiou, Program Manager of Technology Management Strategies for the Yankee Group. Andrew will give the audience a framework for identifying business needs, analyzing the application portfolio and selecting appropriate applications for offshore outsourcing, along with identifying appropriate venues for outsourcing. Attendees of past BrainStorm conferences have rated this topic very highly, identifying it as a source of great information.
Next, Paul Schmidt, Founder and CEO of the Offshore Development Group, will speak on "Offshore Trends, the Emerging Global Market." The market for offshore sourcing has matured in the last five years. India and Ireland are major success stories, but several other regions have also made significant progress. Paul has a lot of experience with outsourcing capabilities in the rest of the world and believes that Russia, China, and other countries have great potential. He will give his recommendations on how to evaluate and use the new global resources.
"Profit Accelerator: A Case Study in the Offshore Value Advantage" presented by Alan Park, President and CEO of Praxid, is next on the agenda. Alan will discuss Wall Street rules that dictate operational and financial changes, Praxid's search for an outsourcing partner, and the expected benefits from the offshore migration.
The morning will end with a panel on "Global Sourcing Strategies" hosted by Paul Schmidt. Participants will discuss the pros and cons of working with nearshore and offshore solution providers including business benefits, political challenges and technical infrastructure issues. Lunch will follow this panel, with dessert and coffee served at the Solutions Showcase.
The afternoon sessions begin with a case study on Global Sourcing presented by Barney Sene, a Senior Director of General Electric Power Systems. GE has been a leader in IT offshore outsourcing for almost a decade. In this presentation, GE will discuss its offshore strategy experiences. Sene will also provide an overview of GE's Parts Edge project, which was rated as the fifth best project for 2002 by Infoweek and among the top 10 projects by Computerworld. GE, one of the most experienced big-company outsourcers, has seen all the pros, cons, and trends in this space. This presentation is hosted by Birlasoft.
The next session offers a presentation by Gerald Levesque, former Senior Partner of AOS/BPO of PricewaterhouseCoopers and President of Systech, a professional services firm specializing in CXO level outsourcing consulting. This presentation will cover the evolution of the Business Process Outsourcing market and some of the changes in business focus that will determine the future of BPO. Gerald will cover the different legal issues, service-level challenges, and the growing scope of these services.
The last presentation will be a BPO Panel moderated by Gerald Levesque and will address the "Critical Success Factors in Outsourcing." Service providers offering Business Process Outsourcing will participate as panelists. The conference will then adjourn to the Solutions Showcase for the evening reception.
