Apr 18, 2006
The world’s 80 strongest teams contested in the Finals, among which there were 10 teams from Russia. Glorious victory was scored by the teams of Russian Universities: 5 medals out of 12 available were gained by the Russians! Saratov State University team became the 2006 World Champion. The third (gold) rank was gained by Altai State Technical University, the sixth (silver) rank went to St. Petersburg State University, Students from Moscow State University and Ufa State University of Aviation gained the 10th and the 11th ranks respectively.
The ACM Contest is the world’s most prestigious intellectual competition for young programmers. Russian University teams participate in the Contest since 1996 and are traditionally one of the Championship leaders. They have been regularly gaining medals and in 2000, 2001 and 2004 were ranked World Champions. It should be mentioned that this Year among 22 European finalists there were 10 Russian teams.
RUSSOFT (the association of Russian, Ukrainian and Byelorussian Software developers) has been sponsoring regional semifinals as well as the World Finals contestants for 5 years running. The member companies of RUSSOFT in their local cities support University teams during all the stages of the Contest, which helps Russian teams gain the top scores late years.
Valentin Makarov, the President of RUSSOFT Association comments on Russian students’ success in San Antonio:
"Expanding dominance of Russian Universities at the ACM World Finals dazzles. We (RUSSOFT) have been sponsoring Russian and Byelorussian contestants for 5 years already and we can see how the flow of the young, motivated and gifted programmers spurts heavily. Only few of them go overseas, overwhelming majority stay in Russia teaching, being engaged in research work in the Universities, working in the local companies or engaging in their own business. It is of no surprise that with the flux of such reinforcement the software development industry demonstrates growth of 30-40% and exports Software for 1 billion dollars annually.
It is especially pleasant to see the vast geography of the medalists. Saratov State University has already become the Europe’s Champion and now worthily is the World Champion. On the whole the Volga region has colossal potential for the industry growth.
Siberians also amaze! Altai State Technical University surprised everyone by their participation in the St. Petersburg Regional Contest and showing one more colossal success in San Antonio! I would like to conclude by saying that Siberia with its research centers in Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Barnaul will certainly give the global market examples of innovative technologies and products - and very soon!"
"We at Auriga take pride in the spectacular achievements of the Russian teams in the ACM World Finals," said Auriga (Full Member of RUSSOFT Association) President Alexis Sukharev. "The results are all the more invigorating as they point to Russia’s leading position in training world-class IT professionals with unparallel knowledge, experience, creativity, and abilities to find unique solutions to most complicated tasks. We also take personal pride in these results because Auriga originated from Moscow State University back in the early 1990s, and it still enjoys close links with this globally recognized center for education, science, and research," adds Auriga President.
