Apr 15, 2005
L.D. Reiman commented that 2004 has become one more year of active development and modernization of the country. It was successful both for the industry and for economy as a whole. Communications and IT development substantially contributed to the positive dynamics of the country development.

In 2004, the information communication technologies industry maintained a high rate of growth. This trend has been observed since 2000. Last year, the market grew 30.5% in all sectors, which is more than four times more than the general economic growth rate.

The role of information as an economic resource keeps growing, and information technologies are becoming a driver of postindustrial economy development. In 2004, the Russian IT market volume amounted to RUR 255.6 billion, which is 20% more than a year before.

The communication services market is growing even faster. In the last five years, it has been growing 40% annually, and 2004 results confirm this dynamics. By preliminary estimate, last year, the market volume amounted to RUR 540 billion, which is 37% more than a year before. Telecommunication operators' revenues exceeded RUR 500 billion, and income from postal services provision amounted to RUR 34 billion.

Mobile telephone communications have been developing fast: in 2004, the number of subscribers almost doubled to reach 72 million (the level of penetration is 50 telephones per 100 persons). Today, there are already more than 80 million mobile communications subscribers.

The number of Internet users keeps growing. In 2004, there were 18.5 million of them, which means one in every eight persons in Russia (and a half of those living in Moscow) uses the Internet. The total number of personal computers in Russia increased by 15% and exceeded 15 million. The number of users of public access points of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise, Post of Russia, amounted to 3.5 million.

In 2004, more than RUR 82.5 billion were transferred to the consolidated budget, out of which RUR 76.5 billion were transferred to the Federal budget.

These figures reflect huge efforts undertaken last year by communication operators, hardware, software and information manufacturers and governmental bodies.
