Press evening during February the 3rd, dedicated to the open source technologies and Linux OS, took place at the RUSSOFT Moscow office. It was organized right before the Open Source Forum Russia, first large-scale open source conference and exhibition, that RUSSOFT, "Fort-Ross" and Linux Inc. will carry out during April 27-29 in Moscow.

Irina Zadirako (Economical development and trade Ministry of Russian Federation, EDTM), Selena Semushkina (Federal IT agency, ITFA at the Ministry of IT and communication of Russian Federation), Alexei Smirnov (ALT Linux), Denis Sosnovtsev (IBM) and event organizers - Vyacheslav Zvyagintsev, Dmitriy Dmitriev (both from Linux Inc.), Valentin Makarov (RUSSOFT) and Vera Semyonova ("Fort-Ross") told about the open source and development outlooks for open technologies in Russia.

State officials explained why the government supports Open Source Forum and how open source software is used for the governmental needs. Security importance is one of those causes. Such governmental structures as Ministry of Defense can’t use the systems "with restricted source code access" and systems that can be cracked. In this case open source software is more reliable. On the other hand we have another valid reason to choose open code - the costs of license software. This is why many users prefer to use open source. And last, but not least reason to use this technology is that this kind of software is opened for overpatching and can be quickly readopted to the customer requirements due to the free competition between open source software developers.

The chiefs of the Linux-solutions companies were really pleased and satisfied by the attention, that open source attracts in nowadays. ALT Linux director Alexei Smirnov, highlighted: "today the major international events organizer is interested in Linux". Linux Inc. director Vyacheslav Zvyagintsev explained the interest of the government and society to open source by its political meaning: "Today we have the tendency towards economy redirection from oil sector to the IT area. Right now we have exactly those targets, and luckily we do have resources for it". On Mr. Zvyagintsev's opinion open source is the strategic resource for new IT development. "Final product, based on open source, can be useful both as for domestic needs as well as can have large export value" – stated Mr. Zvyagintsev.

Dmitriy Dmitriev (Development director, Linux Inc.) said, that phenomenal open technologies development, that was not commercially supported in the beginning, became possible due to Open Source philosophy: "all you give is all yours". "Linux started with small open source segments. Then the large scale developers paid attention to this technology, considering it as the Microsoft competitor. And nowadays, Linux is present almost at every part of our lives. 70% of servers are controlled by open source software. Now our target is to clarify for all other regular users that this technology is reliable."

Lively discussion started right at the end of speech. Linux-society will show the original projects and solutions during the Open Source Forum Russia, based on the open source – "Open Source Forum Live". Those projects will be chosen on the competitive basis. Mini "Linux-city" will be built, based on the open technologies.

Major Linux companies confirmed their participation in the event: IBM, Novell (Richard Seibt, Novell's president for Europe, Africa and Far East, former SUSE Linux AG head), Mandrakesoft (Francois Bancilhon, president), MySQL (David Axmark, one of the founders), RedHat (Alex Pinchev, vice president), Zope Corporation (Rob Page, president), Trolltech (Matthias Eltrich) and many others, as well as stars of open-source world: Larry Wall, Perl founder Jon maddog Hall, CEO of Linux Int.

Main conclusion of the evening became as unified opinion both of program committee and professional review authors: "Open source is one of the most progressive directions for IT development".
