Over the last 5-10 years, Russia has carved out a reputation as a country with a large number of high-quality professionals in the software development sector. These professionals existed 20 years ago, but due to immature industry they were merely neglected, unable to demonstrate their talents on the world arena. Links between Russian professionals and the outside world began to form only in the last decade.

In a relatively short period of time, Russia has become a notable supplier on the world market of software development. Data from leading analytical agencies show that India is in first place in the sphere, with several countries – including Russia – vying for second place.

In 2005, software exports continued to grow at a relatively fast rate. Total export earnings for software companies grew by 28% to just shy of $1 billion.

There is an excellent passage in the Forrester Research paper titled "Debunking Russian Offshore Myths". It was written with respect to the Russian information technology market, but could speak for the whole country. "Give up using myths as decision tools. Some of the myths about Russia and its offshore software developers hold at least a measure of truth. But others fall down on close inspection - and may not have been really founded in fact in the past. IT execs looking for sound offshore software development skills should use a more fact-based platform to evaluate their Russian opportunity".
