The volume of the market of information technologies and services of domestic make has reached 1 billion US dollars, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said at a meeting of the Council on the development of information society in Russia on Thursday.

"In recent years information technologies and services have become a considerable item of our civilian non-raw material export reaching the level of 1 billion US dollars," he stressed.

Medvedev said that according to latest data, "every fourth Russian family has a computer." "However, regarding the key indicators in this sphere we are so far way behind developed countries," the Russian president stated.

In the past year, Russia’s government has started to give IT a much higher place in national policy priorities, with an ambitious series of IT oriented ‘technoparks’ starting to be rolled out, and laws being passed to provide tax and other incentives for companies specialising in IT. This all signifies that IT is now seen as central to Russia’s economic ambitions of doubling GDP by 2010 compared to 2001.

Against the backdrop of a consumer boom that is being fuelled by high oil prices, and with strong computer market growth in the first nine months of 2006, Russia is beginning to live up to its potential status as one of the largest IT markets in Europe. Indeed as one of the ‘BRIC’ countries (the others being Brazil, India and China), Russia is showing signs of becoming a market that, through its scale, can influence global industry developments. Manufacturers of components and hardware alike are increasingly tailoring their products for the local market, while Russia is becoming an increasingly important centre for software development, according to the Russia 2009 IT Report.
