Ekzorobotiks took first place in the contest for their Exoatlet project, which was designed to produce Russia’s first artificial human exoskeleton.

As founder and CEO Yekaterina Bereziy said, the funds will be spent on the creation of a second prototype the exoskeleton. It is expected that development will be completed in two years, after which time clinical trials will begin. The exoskeleton the team has been working on for the past three years will be used in the treatment of post-traumatic and post-operative rehabilitation.

"This is a very powerful, knowledge-intensive and socially important project. The most difficult task was to make the exoskeleton easy to use," said Bereziy.

For the creation of the project, the patent for which is held by the Institute of Mechanics at Moscow State University, the team received 900,000 rubles ($25,723). In addition, participation in the Startup Village competition may have helped the team find potential investors.

"Representatives of several venture funds approached us during the competition, saying that they were interested in talking with us [about our project] and that they were willing to consider backing us. I think after today's win, they will be inclined to continue those discussions," said Bereziy.

Second place in the competition was shared between the Nanooptica and Radio Gigabit teams. The Nanooptica project applies numerical planar holographic technology to integrated optics, while Radio Gigabit is developing innovative radio-relay systems. These projects each received 600,000 rubles ($17,148) in prize money. A further 18 projects received 150,000 rubles ($4,287) each.

During the Startup Village event, a number of other competitions were held in individual categories. 3D-Tek won in the FavorIT Project category for creating technology that addresses the basic shortcomings of 3D projection to allow viewers to watch 3D at close range with a wide angle of view. The winner received a check for 9 million rubles ($257,229).

Second place in the FavorIT Project category was awarded to Tempesta, for creating a hybrid HTTP accelerator and firewall designed to prevent application level DDoS attacks, while TRIC received third place for drafting a standardized robotic platform.

Teams from Tomsk, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod each received prizes in the Tehnostart contest for innovative projects in the field of mechanical engineering.

As a result of the competitions, a number of projects have been offered the opportunity to become residents at Skolkovo. The winners are also eligible for a number of grants from the Skolkovo Foundation, venture fund investments and mentoring assistance from the organizers of the event.

More than 9,000 people participated in the Startup Village conference, with the competition involving nearly 2,000 projects.
