The Challenge

A Web forum for exchange of information between physicians and pharmaceutical companies had experienced an influx of subscribers. The customer was looking for ways to improve the overall subscriber browsing experience. To help solve this task, customer IT management decided to learn more about visitor profiles by analyzing forum subscriber logs and making summary reports available to marketing and technical management through a Web interface.
Artezio was asked to design and implement several JSP pages to append to the site so that authorized staff could view up-to-date summaries of browser types used by subscribers, their operating systems, and technical problems encountered while participating in the on-line forum. Unstructured raw information was readily available in BEA WebLogic application server logs and after processing was supposed to be saved in a DBMS.

The Solution

We started off by designing the look of the Web pages – one page for each type of report. After a few interactive consultations with the client, the final page design was approved. Artezio created HTML templates and used Java Servlet/JSP technology allowing dynamic generation of HTML pages. Visitation statistics and reports were archived in an Oracle database for easy retrieval and reference. We used Oracle stored procedures for data aggregation and analysis. The customer emphasized the need to generate custom reports and group data based on user preferences. In order to fulfill this requirement, we included customizable tree-like structures with expandable folders in JSP pages for easy navigation and convenient viewing of statistics. In addition to the Web application itself, Artezio delivered an install utility for easy application deployment and customization.
This project matched customer expectations for producing and putting into production an additional operational module of their website. Artezio’s solution made it easier to track occasional browsing problems, helped to proactively modernize the site by taking into account evolving ratios of browser and operating system combinations used by subscribers, and improved overall subscriber satisfaction.
