The Challenge

To develop the 1st edition of Biology Concepts Library: 60 new interactive concepts in Biology utilizing animation (2D, 3D), video, simulation, or some combination of those media to best convey the concept. These media objects are delivered in numerous CD, DVD and websites and intended to be used by instructors in introductory college level non-major courses during lecture presentations, practical training and homework assignments.

The Solution

This project is a pilot for the customer to sell electronic media content independently, not related to any specific paper book, which was a typical business model before. That is why the main business objective of the project was to produce learning media objects of exceptional complexity, pedagogic value and quality so there will be market demand for them without any supporting paper textbooks.
Competentum Group was chosen as a developer for this project due to long and successful history of electronic media content development supporting customer’s Science books, huge amount of interactive content developed for its own products and a number of world-class Biology experts in the team.. The main difference of this process from usual software development is significant involvement of subject matter experts and instructional designers on all stages of the development, so the process is inherently iterative and creative till the very end. For this project OpenTeach provided the customer with the complete set of services starting from each concept’s textual and visual storyboard development to QA of ready concepts. The project involved 3 OpenTeach’s Biology experts, the teachers of leading Moscow universities along with 2 instructional designers. Due to this project’s exceptionally complex development and review workflow, it was quite a challenge to keep track on all reviewer comments, change requests and suggestions for individual units as well as overall project progress. That is why OpenTeach introduced its new online media content production tracking system, specially designed for managing this type of development processes.
