The Challenge

Ibaby.com is online store of items for babies. It offers products in such categories as toys, gifts, garments, etc. Administration application allows managing online store: to enter new items, to edit existing items, to assign items to product categories. As number of items increased the administration program performance went down and a day when the program stopped to work had come. SoftDev was requested to optimize the administration program for short period - one day, during the night in the US.

The Solution

SoftDev specialists analyzed both the database and the application and found out reasons of low performance. The database structure was somewhat complex, tables contained hundred thousands records, and some operations resulted in hard work of SQL server.

SoftDev specialists designed a cache based on SQL server tables the purpose of which is to collect relevant data in separate tables during the application session. The structure of these tables allows very fast manipulation with data. A set of stored procedures to work with database and cache had been written and the administration program had been adjusted to work with cache.

First tests (at the end of day) showed that performance had increased in hundreds times.

Results: By the morning ibaby.com had received database update script and fixed administration application. After running the updates they were very satisfied with the results and high performance.
