The Challenge

Customer company undertook the development of the web-based application for an information center dedicated to answering questions from concerned citizens in case of a nuclear incident, and support the information infrastructure of the civil defense organization. The development of the core component of the system - geographical map viewer was outsourced to Intelligence-Soft.

Main problem of map visualization software intended for a web-based systems is minimization of data transfer through the Internet. To provide user with an opportunity to scroll the map and to choose desirable zoom level system had to have flexible algorithm selecting only necessary data from huge amount of information representing entire map.

The Solution

Intelligence-Soft engineers developed ActiveX component displaying geographical maps and helper utility splitting the map data into hundreds or even thousand of smaller files, each about 20 kb. This way the user will only need to download what is absolutely needed to view the area in focus. By means of helper utility it is possible to create a very detailed map of the whole world with a total size of several gigabytes, and the user can still access this map via the internet. Starting with the world as seen from a satellite and zooming in up to the street view in a small town, user has only to download between 100 and 500 kb (depending on actual map contents).

Other advanced features of eMapX include:

Viewing the map in different projections such as Sinus, Gnomonic, Plate Caree and many more.
Data are cached so once downloaded, they need not be downloaded again.
Distance and search functions (text and coordinates)
Can show bitmaps and simple drawing objects on top of a map from application or HTML page (integrates easily with IDC, ASP and other dynamic web-content script languages)
