Project Title: Business Application Re-engineering
The Challenge
XENERGY sought to modernize its legacy software application, initially written in PL1, that offers electric and natural gas utilities additional ways to connect to their customers. The application processes customer survey data and related energy market information to generate detailed reports that help individuals and organizations better understand their energy usage, as well as provide recommendations for energy use optimizations. Out-of-date, obsolete technologies made the product difficult and costly to maintain, and also limited development of new features and enhancements to usability necessary to adapt to the changing market. The Solution
VDI offered a combination of local needs analysis and project management with the cost savings available from a development staff based in Moscow. More importantly, VDI spoke to quality issues that most concerned XENERGY.VDI partnered with XENERGY to implement a new modular architecture for their product, develop additional components and functions, and web-enable the application. All changes requested by XENERGY were incorporated into the development process and, as part of VDI's development methodology, were signed off by XENERGY beforehand. XENERGY was consistently impressed by the work ethic and dedication of the offshore development team in Moscow. The team worked in shifts and covered almost a full business day on the East coast, despite the eight-hour time difference. Pursuant to VDI's motto, the product was successfully completed and delivered to XENERGY on time and within budget.
As dictated by VDI's development methodology, XENERGY received frequent progress updates, and held weekly conference calls with VDI's onsite technical account manager and the leader of the development team in Moscow to review and discuss issues. The project manager who led the effort at XENERGY estimates that to have completed the project in-house, they would have had to hire a minimum of 12 full-time engineers and that the effort would have required a lot more of her time for management issues.
Tools and Technologies
The re-engineered product was built on a Visual C++, COM+ structure, Windows NT/2000 server platform with an MS ASP web integration and MS SQL database. Seagate Crystal Reports provides output reporting.Related links
