Project Title: IBM WebSphere portal for Russian Railways

The Challenge

One of the biggest railway companies in the world operating freight and passenger transport and providing infrastructure services. The company owns around 20,000 locomotives, 25,000 passenger wagons and 650,000 freight wagons. Total number of its employees is over 1 million located in its customer’s offices. The company’s net profit in 2007 exceeded $5 billion.

The customer was looking for the options to achieve significant increase of its employees’ productivity, which was one of the primary short-term business goals officially articulated by the company. Implementation of a corporate portal was one of the 1st steps to reach increased labor productivity. The portal was intended to accelerate company’s business performance through improved collaboration and efficient information management. The customer decided first to launch the portal for IT specialists (about 12,000 users) and then extend its functionalities and capacity for all other employees (which would make up dozens of thousands of users).

The Solution

To get a scalable, enterprise-level system involving mainframes IBM WebSphere Portal was chosen. It was an ideal solution in terms of scalability, using cutting-edge technologies and meeting customer’s need for web 2.0 enhanced collaboration tools and unified web-based access point to legacy business applications.

Further integration of the Portal with customer’s Enterprise applications, i.e. Enterprise Information Storage, e-Learning and ERP is to be performed in the near future. WebSphere portal offers out-of-the-box connectors to many of legacy systems, which makes integration easier and cheaper. Covering remote offices employees, being scalable when adding new users and flexible in access rights, the solution is supposed to be introduced to the customer’s business partners abroad.
