The Challenge

The video-server "V-media" is intended for use in CCTV systems. The video-server "V-media" need to provide a broadcast of video-information from 4 or more video cameras in a Fast Ethernet network with the use of the MPEG-4 (Advanced Simple Profile) videocompression standard. This is accomplished in realtime with frame resolution from QCIF to D1 (PAL/NTSC). The video-server need to provide encoded video information with a speed of 25 (PAL) or 30 (NTSC) frames per second while operating under "constant quality" or "constant bit flow" stream. Control interface to control parameters of the compression and transmission must be presented.

The Solution

The device is embodied in a dedicated 4 processor platform, on the base of the Trimedia PNX1300 multimedia processor by Philips. The device provides control of the image formatting, quality parameters and density of the compressed video-stream via RS-232. Device performs support of standard video formats. Video server has a capability to smoothly change the resolution of a scene from QCIF to D1. Network processor controls the parameters of the compression algorithm and provides transmission information in Fast Ethernet networks. For MPEG4 encoding Free-source ANSI C MPEG 4 codec was used with subsequent optimization for Trimedia DSP architecture. Development was performed using the Trimedia Evaluation board. Software transfer to the target platform was performed at the last stage of the project. Embedded of the video server software can be reloaded by Ethernet interface.
