On 20 June 2012, an Intel subsidiary officially received Skolkovo participant status and announced plans to build an R&D centre in Skolkovo. Its first project in Skolkovo will be the development of an intelligent automotive system supported by ERA GLONASS-based open software platform services.

Intel’s Group Vice President of Software Products and Services and General Manager of Products for Software Developers William Savage discussed the project at a press conference during the World Economic Forum in St. Petersburg. He explained that the proposed platform is designed to meet the requirements of the automotive industry based on Tizen’s open source operating system, which is adopted as the standard by the GENIVI alliance of automakers.

The project has developed hardware and software solutions, localized for the Russian market, that integrate both infrastructure services (such as ERA GLONASS) as well as additional features to enhance the comfort and safety of intelligent vehicle systems through advanced monitoring and control device parameters. These solutions allow you to move to a new level of on-board computer systems for vehicles that offer both the driver and passengers a higher class of service.

Intel is of firm belief that a further transition to mass production and use of standard components make these devices attractive for Russian manufacturers. Uniform platforms for the home, office and car will quickly integrate computers and applications with automotive systems.

"Intel is one of the Skolkovo Foundation’s key strategic partners. Its international experience, advanced technology and ensure the company’s rightful position as a leading position in the global IT industry. Today is a great day as we can announce a new quality of interaction with our partner, whose subsidiary acquired participant status" - said Conor Lenihan, Vice-President for International Partners, Skolkovo Foundation.

"We hope that Intel’s participation in the Skolkovo project will facilitate the commercialisation of Russian science, help strengthen ties between industry and science, as well as to establish communication between IT companies for the successful development of an innovative economy in Russia," - said Kamil Isaev, Director General for Research and Development of Intel Russia.

Software development is a priority for Intel in Russia. Among the key tasks in the field of information technology are high-performance computing and graphics & communications technology, including the development of multimedia systems for cars. To implement these projects, more than 700 software engineers will be working together in research and development centres in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk. Intel plans to involve Russian engineers in world-class projects, as Russia economic development clearly requires technological innovation.
