Motorola Formally Assesses Star Software at CMM Level 3
Dec 18, 2003
Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, and St. Petersburg, Russia, December 12, 2003
Star Software Corporation today received the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) Capability Maturity Model (CMM) Level 3 Rating for defined software development. The Carnegie Mellon SEI Software CMM, is a model for judging the maturity of software processes within an organization and for identifying the key practices that are required to ensure disciplined software development. It has become a de facto assessment standard and a key tool for the evaluation of software development service providers.
"Today marks an important milestone for Star Software Corporation," according to Nick Puntikov, Star's CEO. "After twelve years in the software development business, satisfying the quality demands of our clients in the US and across Europe, it's now easier for new business partners to understand our capabilities. The formal CMM assessment gives our partners a completely objective, understandable and practical tool with which to measure our approach to highly critical work."
The key process areas at CMM Level 3 address both project and organizational issues, as the organization institutionalizes effective software engineering and management processes. Both management and engineering activities are documented, standardized, and integrated into a repeatable, approved process for developing and maintaining software across the entire organization and across all projects.
Star's assessment was carried out by The Motorola Global Software Group of Schaumburg, Illinois. John Pellegrin, PhD and Manager , Process & Quality Excellence Consulting at Motorola and Star's lead assessor said, "It was a pleasure to review Star Software's development processes and participate in their further process improvement efforts. We concluded the formal assessment today in St. Petersburg, using our SEI-compliant CMM Appraisal Framework. I'm very happy to congratulate Star on meeting all of the stringent requirements set out by the SEI for Maturity Level 3."
Star's CMM assessment publicly enhances its full-service customer offering. Brian Phelps, Star's President based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, summed it up by saying, "CMM alone does not ensure customer satisfaction. The important news today is that, with our CMM assessment, our customers will understand our software development process precisely. At the same time, they will be able to draw upon our expertise in methodologies like Agile and XP when project requirements dictate. Star's real achievements will always be based on our flexible, customer-centric approach, guided by recognizable international standards. "
