Nizhny Novgorod and Intel help high school students join science and business

The Nizhny Novgorod Regional Ministry of Education in close collaboration with Intel and the local Elevator to the Future nonprofit are pushing across Russia’s 15-constituent Volga Federal District their joint STEM Centers program

Dec 25, 2013
The STEM Centers are a network of laboratories enabling high school students to work on scientific projects and receive mentorship from young university professors and R&D organization employees.

A preparatory stage of the 2014 program was formally launched in late November. During the month of December high school students are choosing scientific areas to focus on and labs to work at.

The STEM Centers operate on the premises of regional academic research institutes and universities in the Volga Federal District. They are all said to be fully equipped for research activity. Using the equipment, the students can conduct experiments they need to find solutions to their scientific problems.

Each of the program participants can apply for participation in the ROST Volga competition of scientific and engineering projects. The winners of the competition represent Russia at Intel’s ISEF international contest.

STEM is the students’ first venue to start networking with scientists and perhaps business leaders potentially interested in the work of young developers—probably one of the key advantages of the joint program in the Volga area.
