Moscow State University on QS’ global top-50 ranking in two subjects
Moscow Lomonosov State University (MSU) has joined the world’s top 50 universities in mathematics and physics, according to QS World University Rankings by Subject 2014, an authoritative global ranker

In QS’ latest ranking, MSU holds the 49th position in both academic disciplines.
Using data on reputation and research citations, the ranking highlights the 200 top universities in the world for 30 individual subjects, the ranker underscores. The U.S. and UK universities are indisputable leaders, holding the positions from 1 to 8 in a row and then appearing in many places further down the list.
The first five in physics and astronomy are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard, Britain’s Cambridge, Stanford, and the University of California, Berkeley.
In mathematics, the top five feature basically the same universities. Harvard pushed MIT from its number one position here, while the UK’s Oxford joined the leaders, pushing its fellow Cambridge to the fourth place.
Moscow Lomonosov State University has improved its ranking in physics since last year when it was far below the top-50 in the first hundred. In mathematics, however, MSU has been downgraded a bit from last year’s 42nd place.
In addition, the Moscow university has got on QS’ list of the best hundred universities in philosophy and modern languages. In chemistry and Earth and Marine sciences, as well as in computer science and information systems, it appears between positions 101 and 150. MSU also holds places further down through the 200th position in mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing, materials sciences, and in statistics and operational research.
"This year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject ranking has confirmed our university’s strong international reputation. Irrespective of this, however, we need to improve in all disciplines to stay one of the world’s best universities," MSU rector Viktor Sadovnichy said in an exchange with Russian news portal Science & Technologies RF, commenting on the latest QS ranking.
Besides MSU, it is only St. Petersburg State University that represents Russia on the QS lists. It holds a position between places 150 and 200 in mathematics, as it did last year, too.
