First stage of Innopolis IT city outside Kazan to kick off by late 2015
Statement by Roman Shaikhutdinov, the vice premier of the Republic of Tatarstan
Nov 05, 2013
The first stage includes a number of buildings with a total area of 300,000 square meters to accommodate the main techno-park, a university, social infrastructure, and residential areas for 5,000 people. The cost of the first stage has yet to be disclosed.
"The Innopolis idea first began in 2010, but officially the project was launched in June 2012. Now we have the master plan of the innovation city developed by Singapore’s RSP Architects Planners & Engineers," Mr. Shaikhutdinov said.
The projected population of Kazan’s satellite city is 155,000, including 60,000 highly skilled professionals. The construction of Innopolis is expected to help Tatarstan address the problem of a noticeable lack of top-notch IT specialists. According to forecasts, by 2018 the region will suffer a deficit of more than 300,000 skilled IT employees.
Part of Innopolis’ territory has already been granted the status of a new special economic zone (SEZ) for innovation technology development. SEZ residents will enjoy various tax benefits.
A key element of Innopolis will be its IT University to be set up jointly with the U.S.’ Carnegie Mellon University.
