IDC Predicts 'Disruptive Shifts' in the IT Market

Instead of spending huge amounts on the IT industry this year, industry leaders will branch out into different models and technologies, predict the market analysts IDC.

Dec 22, 2006
Spending on IT technology is expected to rise by a mere 6.6 per cent next year but the driving force of the market is predicted to be innovation rather than cash injection.

Frank Gens, senior vice president of research at IDC, commented: "As IT market leaders step up their relentless hunt for growth, we'll see many disruptive shifts."

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are expected to be courted with scaled down services, SME IT support and more online and offshore services.

Brazil, Russia, India and China, will continue to have the fastest growing IT markets, but other, less-developed countries like those in the Middle East and north, east and west Africa are also envisaged to begin rapid expansion.

Software and telecom markets will be a challenge for competitors, as will providing quicker and more relevant access to information for consumers, such as Web 2.0, the second generation of Internet-based services.

"These disruptions will force many market leaders out of their comfort zones, and open up new opportunities to those that choose to surf with the disruptive tide, rather than stand against it," added Mr Gens.
