According to the third edition of Unisys' Getting a Grip on IT, businesses are actually struggling to employ IT workers of an adequate standard and are therefore choosing to outsource IT work to boost quality.
Jointly published by Unisys and the Sydney Chamber of Commerce, the research shows that a third of all businesses in New South Wales now struggle to recruit IT personnel and IT outsourcing has become the preferred alternative.
The survey also shows that half of respondents in the region now outsource their IT work, which compares to only one in three in 2005.
"Outsourcing allows a business to contract experts to do the job," said Steve Parker, managing director of Unisys in Australia and New Zealand.
"It's interesting to see that small and medium organisations are also turning to outsourcing, previously the domain of larger companies," he added.
In addition to the difficulties involved in recruiting talented workers, there are also several costs involved in employing a large in-house IT support team. Training is one of the most expensive areas and in a competitive business environment it is unsurprising that companies of all sizes are tending to search for ways of alleviating this problem.
