Abstract:
Many still believe that product engineering in software business is just a new buzzword replacing the old dull "software development". Apparently it is not true – "the natural division" between products engineering and the business of production exists in any industry.

Therefore there are natural entry barriers for software factories to the new brave world of product engineering. CAPEX and OPEX – the two keywords for ITO - do not reflect in full the nature of the engineering business that is targeted to the creation of new solutions and products with the high longevity. There are necessary prerequisites for building up the product engineering center among them being different staff mix, communication processes and organization. But the understanding of the customer’s business model, product lifecycle specifics, "future readiness" of particular technologies, and demonstrated success record are vital to product creation and innovation.
