The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) will start by uploading two of its courses. One is called "Electricity and magnetism." Lecturers, including MIPT’s most renowned professors, are expected to use an easy-to-comprehend format to explain the key aspects of electricity, magnetic phenomena, and the oscillation theory. The course is primarily aimed at technology university students. MIPT hopes to launch it in mid-February 2014.
In the other course, called "The GPU modeling of biological molecules," students will learn online what biomolecules consist of and how to look for and visualize their structures.
Daphne Koller, the Rajeev Motwani professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University and the co-founder of the Coursera project, said that she was pleased to see MIPT join Coursera’s network of universities working to make knowledge open and accessible. "We hope that many students both in Russia and across the world will appreciate the lectures of MIPT’s talented professors," she said.
Alongside MIPT, there are now 13 universities from 11 countries collaborating with Coursera. The other two Russian universities to join the global project are St. Petersburg State University and the Higher School of Economics.
