Mobile operator and IT developer all set to ward off forest fires in Northwest Russia

Mounted on MTS’ base telecom towers, video cameras are reported to enable watchers to visually scan a vast forest territory at an up to 30km distance in sunny weather conditions, support remote control of the alarm system, and automatically alert to a smoke area by sending a signal.
The equipment includes special routers that use MTS’ secure telecommunications channels to transmit fire images to the operators of Forest Patrol, a sophisticated IT-enabled product that Marchmont reported on in detail in its recent feature story.
Today, five MTS towers are used to keep the surveillance cameras. At the moment, the mobile operator and a relevant Komi government authority are in talks over mounting monitoring equipment on two more base towers.
