Tomsk software to help regenerate human memory
Mar 14, 2013
Tomsk Polytechnic University in Siberia announced last week that its team of students and postgraduates, WAFT (We Are From TPU), has developed a project enabling drug-free memory regeneration.
The Total Recall project offers a software-enabled system that helps people with amnesia recollect their memory by analyzing the movement pattern of their eye pupils as the patients view a special series of photos.
According to the team members, at the heart of the project is a method of associative thinking, in which information to be remembered is tied to some other information a patient already knows about. The approach is said to not only allow people to learn new data but also to refresh in their memory some old facts.
The system is based on special software designed for "one of the modern platforms’ (unspecified as yet). It is assumed to be user-friendly as all one needs to run the app is a computer and a web camera.
The project is reported to have won its place in the Russian final of Microsoft Imagine Cup 2013, a major international competition for students, to be held in Moscow. Microsoft has been supporting such events since 2003. This year, the global Microsoft Imagine Cup final will take place in Russia for the first time; St. Petersburg will host it in summer.
