Kaspersky Lab’s big win: Product of the Year by AV-Comparatives
One of Russia’s most famous digital exports in recent years has been Kaspersky Lab, an Internet security company that has gone from strength to strength, now winning AV-Comparatives’ “Product of the Year”.

It’s a funny old world we live in. Once, the US and Russia were at each other’s throats for decades during the Cold War, and now, while the two countries aren’t exactly the closest of friends, plenty of people in the traditional West are happy to use and trust Russia’s top Internet Security software from Kaspersky Lab in homes and businesses.
Of course, with Internet Security being a global business, there are plenty of choices: Symantec has its top selling Norton Internet Security and 360 range, while BitDefender, Panda, AVG, Trend Micro, Avast and others all vie for your Internet Security dollar.
But Kaspersky Lab has certainly been a rising star, giving market leader Symantec a grand dose of competition, with the entire industry spurred on to deliver ever better, ever faster and ever more protective products, as each company seeks to outdo the other.
So, the company is clearly pleased to see that it has won AV-Comparatives’ "Product of the Year" in its Annual Awards, with the award "based on the findings of nine different comparative tests of consumer anti-virus solutions conducted over the year"
Given that Kaspersky had both its Anti-Virus suite, and its Internet Security suite (which includes the Anti-Virus component) in AV-Comparatives’ testing, the company claims the award for both products, stating with significance that it was "the only participant to have been awarded the highest grade – Advanced+ – in all nine tests."
Although Symantec and others will surely protest otherwise, as you’d expect in a fiercely competitive security market, Kaspersky Lab’s MD for Australia and NZ, Andrew Mamonitis, said that: "What sets Kaspersky Lab apart from its competitors is the fact that our products provide superior detection rates and one of the industry’s fastest outbreak response times.
"Kaspersky Lab is using the most advanced and effective protection technologies to ensure customers are protected without having to become a computer expert. It’s about making our customers’ lives as simple as possible, while ensuring they have the best protection available."
Kaspersky Lab’s press release celebrating the win explains how the award was won, stating that: "In deciding on the winner in the nomination of Product of the Year, AV-Comparatives’ experts evaluated solutions’ level of detection of malicious programs and effectiveness of heuristic algorithms, the number of false positives, resource usage, how well an infected system is treated, and effectiveness in "real-world" user scenarios. Each of these parameters was assessed objectively based on the results in the respective tests carried out during the year."
The company continues, stating that: "Throughout 2011 Kaspersky Lab products participated in nine comparative tests of either anti-virus solutions or Internet security suites. In each, the solutions’ different functional characteristics for protecting a computer from today’s threats were evaluated.
"In all tests both Kaspersky Lab solutions received Advanced+, with excellent results in the two principle indicators of any consumer security solution’s quality - effectiveness of malware detection and minimal false positives.
"AV-Comparatives also highly praised Kaspersky Lab’s products’ ability to fully cure systems infected with malware and their overall minimal resource usage. Consequently, for the third time in the history of the annual awards, Kaspersky Lab won Product of the Year.
"Particular commendation in AV-Comparatives’ annual review report was reserved for Kaspersky Internet Security 2012. The review of the product highlighted its easy installation, its full operability in Windows’ safe mode, and the quality of online user support. The program’s new user interface and comprehensive technical documentation were also highly commended."
