Ural cities listed in global Innovation Cities ranking

Mar 14, 2013
Yekaterinburg, the Urals’ largest city, has been listed in the most recent Innovation Cities Global Index by 2thinknow; Moscow and St. Petersburg are also on the list.

The ranking covers 445 cities, or 63% of the world’s cities with a million plus population. A reported 162 benchmark indicators are used, including the broadest ones such as infrastructure conducive to creating new ideas (covering a wide range of indicators from a number of museums to local climate) and to innovation (universities, venture funds, government support), as well as interconnection of various markets in the regions considered.

The cities are divided into five major groups from ‘nuclei’ to ‘starters.’ The Urals’ Yekaterinburg ranks 210th, the third most innovative city in Russia after Moscow (74th) and St. Petersburg (84th), according to 2thinknow.

In addition to Yekaterinburg, the cities of Perm, Orenburg and Izhevsk, located next to the Ural Federal District, have also been listed in the 2thinknow global ranking closer to the bottom of the list.

The world’s top innovation cities are Boston, New York, and Vienna, 2thinknow believes.
