Rostov-on-Don is a political, economic and cultural center of the south of Russia, the port of the five seas, possesses substantial industrial, financial and scientific potential. The city is the capital of the Russian Southern Federal District with a population of 4.4 mln people and territory 38.9 thousand square miles. Principal industries include machine building, food processing and light industry.Rostov-on-Don has acquired additional political and economic importance since it became the capital of the region as a result of Putin’s recent reform of Russia’s federal system. The reform-minded government and relatively favorable investment climate have attracted strategic investments from the large international corporations. The largest foreign investment projects are in soft drink bottling (US), cellular telecom (US) and ship building (Germany).
Being a prominent educational center in Russia, Rostov-on-Don has point three (after Moscow and St. Petersburg) in the list of Russian cities with the biggest number of higher education institutions.
